WDP Wood Pellet Alternative

What is The Wood Pellet Alternative Initiative?

Lower income families in the northern tier of the United States are the folks that need access to fuel pellet alternative energy, yet they are the ones that can least afford it. If low-income families could use the product it would help them in today’s critical energy environment as well as save states and other agencies (i.e., Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program or LIHEAP) subsidizing this segment of our population millions of dollars. In a recent article, the Governor of one New England state appealed to the federal government stating that fuel assistance programs needed to be doubled to divert a potential disaster in the making.

How can a solution be developed to allow the people in need to access this viable, cost saving - even life saving – fuel? Little can be done for the coming heating season (2008/2009); but a lot can be done for future seasons.

WD Pellet believes that a method of getting this savings to the people most in need can be achieved by the industry itself through wood pellet manufacturers, appliance manufacturers, equipment manufacturers as well as energy and environmental activist. They can all help make a difference. How? The creation of The Wood Pellet Alternative Initiative is a not-for-profit effort to help subsidize the cost of adding pellet appliances to the homes of qualifying families. The addition of these pellet appliances alone will result in peace of mind and community goodwill, not unlike the Habitat for Humanity premise.

Such an organization can be funded through grants, endowments and industry contributions in cash or kind. We do not see this effort as necessarily being a straight grant to the qualifying families, but rather a low cost subsidized program that can be amortized over longer periods to finance the conversion to fuel pellet use. In some cases where even the low cost subsidy is still too high, the conversion can be granted. The early programs can be simple as financing the cost of appliance acquisition and installment with first year discounts on fuel prices.

The benefit to the qualifying families is immediate. The long-term benefit to the industry and local economies is the reduction of fossil fuels and greenhouse gases, and, for some area, an increase in local economies, specifically those close to pellet manufacturers.

The industry is building long-term users and building local credibility for its products. Local, state and federal agencies will be saving resources, and will allow for more assistance to be provided to the ones most in need. The economic impact is that capital is being retained in the economy as opposed to leaving the market to overseas beneficiaries. This is a win-win program for the market overall and America specifically.

WD Pellet is challenging the industry as a whole, local, state and federal politicians and, American citizens to provide financial support to this critical and needed program. WD Pellet is sponsoring an effort to form a steering committee to determine how best to organize The Wood Pellet Alternative Initiative and to develop charters in multiple states. We are inviting individuals, and legal and accounting professionals in markets that have a need for such an effort to step forward and help create a truly beneficial organization that can make a difference.
